“Couch has done an excellent job of breathing new life into an old trope, crafting a clever plot with complex, likable characters. Along the way, he keeps readers on their toes…. If couch occasionally throws his readers for a loop, they’ll be glad he does.” ― Booklist, starred review

The Importance of Queer Representation in Young Adult Literature

A talk that focuses on the real world implications of representation in media, including 1) why it matters that young LGBTQ+ readers from all walks of life can see themselves in the pages of a book, 2) how adult allies can promote diversity in YA lit and beyond, and 3) why recent book bans harm not just queer teens but *all* young readers.

The Dos And Donts of Writing Queer Characters

While there are no official “right” or “wrong” ways to create an LGBTQ+ character, there are certainly important factors to keep in mind while crafting complex, authentic characters who are LGBTQ+, especially if the storyteller does not belong to the queer community themselves. This talk would also include the topic of sensitivity/authenticity readers, as well as a nuanced discussion of #OwnVoices.

What's It Like Getting Your Novel Optioned for Film and TV?

As someone who knew nothing about film and TV adaptations just a few years ago, I have learned *a lot* about the process, and can share both the nuts and bolts basics, as well as the juicier, fun tidbits, related to getting your book optioned for film and TV.

While my first novel, The Sky Blues, hasn’t gone into production yet, it has been optioned by Walden Media and recently landed director Michael Medico (Grey’s Anatomy, Atypical) in early 2024. I am a consultant for the film. My third novel, If I See You Again Tomorrow, has also been optioned by Skydance and producer Bill Bost, and I am a co-producer on the project.
