Andrew Maraniss is a New York Times bestselling author of narrative nonfiction for teens and adults, focusing on the intersection of sports and social justice.

His first book, Strong Inside, was the recipient of the 2015 Lillian Smith Book Award and the lone Special Recognition honor at the 2015 RFK Book Awards. The Young Reader edition was named one of the Top 10 Biographies and Top 10 Sports Books of 2017 by the American Library Association and was selected as a Notable Social Studies Book for 2019 by the National Council for the Social Studies.

His second book, Games of Deception, is the story of the first U.S. Olympic basketball team, which competed at the 1936 Summer Games in Nazi Germany. It received the 2020 Sydney Taylor Honor Award and was named one of Amazon’s Best Books of 2019. Both the National Council for the Social Studies and the American Library Association honored it as a Notable Book of 2019.

His third book, Singled Out, is a biography of Glenn Burke, the first openly gay Major League Baseball player. Esquire magazine named Singled Out one of the “Top 100 Baseball Books Ever Written,” and the American Library Association named it to the 2022 Rainbow Book List. The Young Adult Library Services Association named the audio book version of Singled Out one of the Top 10 audio books of the year for 2021.

His fourth book, published Sept. 13, 2022, is Inaugural Ballers: The True Story of the First U.S. Women’s Olympic basketball team.

Andrew’s new nonfiction chapter book series, Beyond the Game, contains 3 books released in 2024 and contains athletes LeBron James, Maya Moore and Pat Tillman.

Andrew is director of special projects at Vanderbilt University. He has appeared on several national media programs, including NPR’s All Things Considered and Only A Game, NBC’s Meet The Press, MSNBC’s Morning Joe, ESPN’s Keith Olbermann Show, ESPN Radio’s The Sporting Life, and the SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum Show.

The son of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling author David Maraniss and trailblazing environmentalist Linda Maraniss, Andrew was born in Madison, WI, grew up in Washington, D.C. and Austin, Texas and now lives in Brentwood, TN, with his wife Alison and their two young children.

Author Visits

Andrew speaks regularly at K-12 schools, colleges and universities, civic clubs, book festivals, book clubs, libraries and bookstores, and professional conferences.

Many schools have selected Andrew’s books for “schoolwide reads,” including middle schools, high schools and universities. He regularly visits schools all over the country to discuss his books and his writing process with students, and is comfortable speaking to entire gymnasiums full of hundreds of students or giving smaller talks to classrooms and school clubs.

Elementary School Visits

In small group settings or larger assemblies, Andrew discusses his BEYOND THE GAME early chapter book series, talks about the kinds of books he liked to read as a child and the importance of reading, shares how he researches and writes his books, and answers questions from students. Students learn the difference between being a bystander and an upstander.

In classroom, team, or student organization settings and large assemblies, Andrew discusses STRONG INSIDE, GAMES OF DECEPTION, SINGLED OUT and INAUGURAL BALLERS (or any combination of the above), discusses how he generates ideas for books and the research necessary to write nonfiction, describes the writing, editing, and publishing process, and answers questions from students. Students learn the difference between being a bystander and an upstander.

High School Visits

Andrew discusses STRONG INSIDE, GAMES OF DECEPTION, SINGLED OUT and INAUGURAL BALLERS (or any combination of the above) and the social issues at the heart of each story. He shares how his writing career began with a term paper his sophomore year of college. He also discusses the writing, editing, and publishing process and answers student questions. Students learn about the importance of empathy and inclusion.

Adult Events

Andrew discusses STRONG INSIDE and his Young Adult books when relevant (GAMES OF DECEPTION, SINGLED OUT, INAUGURAL BALLERS). He uses the platform of sports to discuss social issues including racism, antisemitism, fascism, homophobia, and sexism. He talks about the research, writing, and editing process, the importance of reading, and supports the freedom to read and speaks out against book bans and anti-DEI rhetoric.
